Sunday review: August 8-13

August 8
The truth is that we all are sinners and have fallen short of the glory of God. I wonder what might happen if instead of tending to see ourselves as better than, we simply acknowledge that we in fact are no better than anyone we know or know about?

Recognizing God sent Jesus as Mediator, Savior, and King of our lives and of the whole world is above all other things. When we seek Jesus first, the will of Jesus will flow more naturally in our lives, and the pull of the world will weaken day by day.

It is pretty clear, if you read the words of Jesus, that his intention wasn't that we would just put our faith in him, but that our faith would be lived out in such a way that the world would see Jesus through our actions, works, and behaviors. Apparently, Jesus didn’t separate our faith from our works.

As I read the first three chapters of Proverbs this morning, I began to think about the factor of time in the development of wisdom.

August 12
… as the church of the living God, we are a pillar and buttress of the truth—not some truth but God’s truth. Sadly we have allowed the witness of the church to get very convoluted and weak. When we see the church as a club or, worse, as an advocate for a political party, we diminish both our calling and our witness.

August 13
Once again we realize and claim that God is our refuge. He is our stronghold and defense against all that seeks to invade our space and our hearts. He is the one who sustains and brings victory. He will rise up to calm the storm and speak peace to us and our situation. He is faithful and will fulfill every promise. And in his time all will one day be restored and resolved and even transformed. Our job is simply to stay focused on him and trust that he is greater than anything around us now and forever.
